Product Description
The United States incarcerates more people than any nation in the world. Since the 1970s, the increase has been eight-fold. Is the prison system about rehabilitation or is it about punishment?

Students will view supporting video and audio clips on understanding the argument, including a segment from John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight. Students will also study Chapter 22 from Miguel Cervantes’ Don Quixote and an Atlantic Monthly article on ramen noodles being the new cigarettes in prison trade. There is a Ted Talk on making prison meaningful and an excerpt from the This American Life podcast and prison.

The lessons feature a prompt on the synthesis essay using articles from the New York Times Room for Debate on prison rehabilitation. Students will work on crafting a persuasive thesis sentence. Instructions and strategies are included on how to teach a rhetorical précis and the Socratic Seminar.

These lessons fit any Honors Literature class, Pre-AP, American Literature, World Literature or AP English Language or Literature class to prepare students for AP English Language exams, Common Core extended response assessments, American Literature Course exams, the SAT and ACT essay and critical thinking activities.

The packet includes complete lessons, Common Core standards, essential and key questions.
