Helps meet Common Core Standard Reading: Foundational Skills 1.2: Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes), including consonant blends.
If you assess with DIBELS nonsense words, this is the activity for you! I actually started using this activity as a worksheet that I found a year before I started DIBELS. One of our prompts in reading workshop is, "Does that sound right? Does it sound like a real word?" Well, this activity lends itself perfectly to helping students decode common word family words and then decide if it is real or nonsense. The fun twist is that there are aliens involved! I decided to make a slide show that would be more interactive than a worksheet and keep me from having to make a new pocket chart center every time. Now I can just use the slides! They can also easily be put in a binder to flip through at a center, or can be shrunken down by printing multiple pages on a sheet to make flashcards or a concentration game.
This game comes with 52 slides, with 24 real/nonsense words, each followed by a self-checking slide. Real words have a boy or girl astronaut (words from Earth) and nonsense words have an alien (words from Mars).
This makes a great transition/brain break- my kids love to make funny martian faces at me as they read the words!
Note: This is a PDF file, but can be flipped through on a projector just like a PPT. This helped me preserve the fonts and graphics in a permanent manner so that I could use them on TpT.
