Add a whole new level of engagement and support for ELLs and visual learners with these task cards for ecosystems that include matching labeled photos of prairie animals. This center challenges students read clues, determine the prairie animals being described, and record their answers. Photos are included to match each prairie ecosystem task card and are used to support students and differentiate the activity to meet student needs.
NEWLY ADDED: I just added a hands-on, build a food web activity and prairie food web poster to this resource! Please download again to access the update. :)
: The labeled photos also make beautiful Science word walls that students love using!
My energetic students love when I tape these task cards around the room to let them MOVE while reviewing prairie ecosystem concepts.
Includes concepts of
The cards also integrate adaptations and food chain vocabulary and concepts, as the "What am I" clues describe various adaptations and food web concepts related to these prairie animals.
Prairie Animals Included:
white tailed deer
These 10 prairie ecosystem task cards require students to read closely and use clues to determine their answer, which integrates the reading skill of making inferences. Meaning, this activity is awesome for a cross-content reading center -- helping to squeeze in more desperately needed Science time!
2 Ways to Play
1. Less support: Search the Room
Post the cards around the room. Independently or in pairs, students locate task cards and record their answers on their answer document. (For added support, students can carry the labeled photos with them to refer to as needed.)
2. More support: Stationary Center
Provide students with the task cards and photographs of the answers. Students match the picture cards with the task card descriptions and record their answers on the response sheet.
This activity is based on 4th grade Science standards.
