This is a whole-school project I completed at our school as an outreach to the elderly of the community. Each student made 2 prayer rocks (Can be made however you wish...you can paint them or as we did, use a glue-water mixture to apply a fabric heart to a rock...then spray with gloss sealant.). Next we packaged them up with the printable Prayer Rock Poem and a little crimped paper in a craft ziplock bag. (Can be found in craft section...4x6 size.) Then each student kept one rock, while the other was given to a member of the local nursing home, or community shut in/home-bound.
The idea is, whenever the person glances at the rock throughout the day, they should offer up a little prayer for the recipient of their prayer rock, and those prayers keep them tied to one another. Both have someone valuing them and praying for them. I have seen many versions of prayer rocks--with a cute poem for little kids, but I wanted something that would be appropriate for the elderly, and send them a message that we care about them. Also, being a teacher, I know that kids enjoy keeping what they make--this makes everyone happy!
The fabric hearts and packaging idea came from this blog: http://worthyoftheprize.blogspot.com/2012/01/hope-for-home-prayer-rock-valentine.html
