A study of grammar using relevant mentor texts ensures that students move beyond idea that grammar is useful only when editing their own writing. This assignment is a great way to introduce the study of grammar as a close reading tool. Students will be able to see how poet A.E. Housman ("Bredon Hill") uses prepositional phrases to add detail to his poem. Of course, the goal is ultimately for the students to understand how prepositional phrases can be used in their own writing to add detail and meaning.
