How many times have you been in the classroom and your students are not sure what to do after reading a word problem?
When I taught middle school math, I put together this Problem Recognition Guide for my students because we had the same issue. Too many times, students can do the math...it is the vocabulary or key words that trip them up!
The guide helps students recognize 28 different types of problems, with PICTURES, KEY WORDS, and some short descriptions about the problems as well.
Here are the 28 different recognition problems within this handout:
1. compare and order FDP's
3. reasonable solutions
4. percent of a number
5. area of squares and square roots
6. scientific notation
7. writing and solving equations
8. min and max
10. terms in a sequence
11. dilating with a scale factor
12. coordinate plane - plotting points and quadrants
18. surface area
20. pythagorean theorem
28. graph types
