Pre-Columbian America: How do the facts differ from the fiction?
The following is a 75 minute Common core compliant lesson/worksheet on Pre-Columbian America. The worksheet includes a series of activities deigned to promote critical thinking, class discussion, and active engagement.
• Do now that appropriately sets up the lesson – True or False activity designed to get a baseline of knowledge about Native Americans
• Pre-Columbian Civilization Investigation – Students are assigned one of two sources to analyze – Source 1 – an NPR audio interview (link included) about the book, 1491 by Charles C. Mann – Source 2 – a secondary source about the Iroquois Confederacy. Students read their source and answer several questions. Then they work with a partner who read the other source to discuss and answer more questions.
• Revisiting the do now – Using their newfound knowledge, students revisit their answers from the beginning of the lesson and answer several more critical thinking questions.
• Finally, students write a brief paragraph discussing the contradictions between the depictions of Pre-Columbian America and the reality.
