This list is intended to be printed and shown on doc cam, or you can just open it up on computer screen and project onto your smartboard/room screen.
The activity involves students each having a paper plate and drawing themselves in middle. Then, they choose 3 words to write around outside of plate, and these words are words that they think people might think of them before they get to know them. Next, they write three words inside those words (closer to their picture) that explain who they really think they are once you take time to get to know them. Activity involves lots of teacher modeling with my very own plate and word choices, since it is a little tricky to get them to think in this fashion right off the bat, but they get it in no time! It can be a very eye-opening and emotional discussion as students share out and explain (as much as they feel comfortable), and helps you get to know your students tremendously! They also make connections with each other, for example: "Oh hey, everybody always thinks you are good at sports, too?! That's what they think about me, too, but I'm not really that good... and I like to spend time drawing more than playing sports."
Without the word display to get them started thinking, it is much more challenging to pull off this activity.
