In the beginning of the year, my students sign in and out with photo cards. After a couple of months, when students show readiness, they sign in and out by writing their names (with the assistance of photo name cards if necessary). Then, I start to add a sign-in question each morning to reflect the monthly units of study. My goal is to build language, vocabulary, thinking skills and enable my students to make connections with the real world around them. Some questions can be Yes or No T-chart types of questions, while others can be answered verbally. All questions can be amended to meet the needs of your students to foster their learning and understanding. This is a Microsoft Word document where each page has at least 15 Unit-themed questions. The units covered include: All About Us, Where We Live, Transportation, Light, Water, Plants, Babies, and Transformation. Visitors enjoy seeing daily sign in questions and see that students can be challenged to extend their thinking. Teachers can use this as an informal assessment of students' understanding of the unit of study.
