This book uses the first 40 words from the Dolch Sight Word List – the Pre-Primer Words. The book follows a sequential order, with the words divided into eight lists (5 words per list).
For each word list, students practice writing the words and reading the words. As the book progresses and the students learn more words, they will need to read sentences and phrases as well. Several lists have additional activities as well.
Use this book as sight word practice and to help keep track of which words students know. As a student reads a word or phrase/sentence correctly, he/she gets to color in a star. It is then up to the teacher if that word, or phrase/sentence, needs to be read again (up to three times). Sometimes I say one time is sufficient. Other times I want all three stars colored in. Of course, these stars should be colored in on different days.
The student is not allowed to move on in the book (to a new list) until at least one star is colored in for all of the words and phrases/sentences on a page. Once at least one star for each has been colored in, the student colors in the stop sign. This means he/she is allowed to move on to a new list.
This book should be used in addition to other sight word practice. Supplement this book with other activities so that your kids can master their sight words.
