In this packet you will find five worksheets that can be used to practice finding the distance between a point and a line.
Students are led through a step by step process through the first four examples. Here are the steps I used.
Graph the situation.
Find the equation of the line perpendicular to the given line through the given point.
Find the point of intersection between the two lines.
Find the distance between the point of intersection and the original point.
On the fifth worksheet, students are given a formula which can be used to check their answers to the previous 4 problems.
A geometric proof is included. I like this proof because it reviews some concepts from geometry AND algebra…similar triangles, slope, parallel lines…etc. I included a student page that the students can write on while you explain the proof, and a teacher page with the entire proof written out.
