In this fall-themed lesson, students investigate the shapes of leaves and work on comparing and contrasting skills. The lesson begins with a science-minded poetic story about how leaves change as seasons change to protect the tree and provide it with energy. After a discussion and story, students then play a matching game, finding leaves’ matching pair. They then analyze what is similar about the pairs, identifying similar shapes, colors and sizes. Students learn that trees from the same species have similar shaped, colored and sized leaves, while leaves from different trees look differently. Students then choose a leaf and find its match among many examples. Lastly, students create an art project using a leaf.
