This product is meant to be used with the History Channel's show Birth of the Earth from the series How the Earth Was Made. The individual episode can be purchased at Amazon.
This is meant to be a self-contained workshop lesson on how the Earth formed during the Precambrian Era. (I realize that it is actually called Precambrian Time and is broken up down into smaller eras, but our middle school textbook sticks with the Precambrian Era so I did as well.) This lesson covers the Earth from its formation from gases around the Sun to the introduction of oxygen in the atmosphere from cyanobacteria. The entire lesson comes from The History Channel’s show “How the Earth Was Made” (Season 1, Episode 3). I have broken the video down into segments and included important vocabulary, questions, and learning targets for each section.
During the mini-lesson you will make sure that students know the necessary vocabulary and that they understand the questions being asked. The working portion of the class will involve students watching a short segment of the video, thinking about the questions, and then coming up with answers to the questions with a partner. Finally, the debriefing will consist of checking the answers to the questions and building an anchor chart with information about how the Earth changed during the Precambrian Era. One longer assessment is also included for measuring student understanding of the entire era.
The module does not include an extra step for re-teaching or for students who are absent for the class instruction. Students can access the video at home and complete the questions independently if they did not understand it the first time.
