This is a zip folder that contains:
-A powerpoint with some basic art history on Pre-columbian Ceramics with image examples and an introduction to the assignment . It asks students to create their own ceramic vessel based on some of the topics used in Pre-Columbian Ceramics. It includes a link to a Powerpoint video slideshow on Youtube, as well as another link with good samples for students. The Powerpoint is 11 pages long.
-a handout that explains the assignment, gives image examples, and provides a space for students to work out their ideas and plan.
-a question sheet for students to answer while showing the Powerpoint
-A very good rubric for the ceramic project with a 5 point scale and 3 categories of making.
I have done this assignment with grades 9 and 10, but it would also work for junior high or higher levels. These handouts and ppt would be paired with lessons on coil building and other hand building techniques in clay. Several weeks is usually spent on this assignment from beginning to end including painting or glazing (I see my students every other day), but if your students are very familiar with clay it may go faster.
