Add a whole new level of engagement and support for ELLs and visual learners with these task cards for ecosystems that include matching labeled photos. This center challenges students to read scenarios about changes in ecosystems, make an inference about what will happen to the described prairie population (increase, decrease, or stay the same), and record their answers on 1 of 3 differentiated answer documents
. Photos are included to match each predicting changes task card and are used to support students and differentiate the activity to meet student needs.
My energetic students love when I tape these task cards around the room to let them MOVE while predicting changes in the prairie ecosystem.
Includes concepts of
Population, ecosystems, scarcity, predators, prey, food webs, food chains, food sources, changing environments, interdependence of organisms, and more!
Prairie Animals Included:
White Tailed Deer
These 10 prairie ecosystem task cards require students to read closely and use clues to determine their answer, which integrates the reading skill of making inferences. Meaning, this activity is awesome for a cross-content reading center -- helping to squeeze in more desperately needed Science time!
2 Ways to Play
1. Less support: Search the Room
Post the cards around the room. Independently or in pairs, students locate task cards, read the scenarios carefully to determine if the prairie population will increase, decrease, or stay the same, and record their answers on their answer document. (For added support, students can carry the labeled photos with them to refer to as needed.)
2. More support: Stationary Center
Provide students with the task cards and photographs of the answers. Students match the picture cards with the task card descriptions and record their answers on the response sheet.
For further differentiation, many of the sets include 3 differentiated levels of student response sheets.
This activity is based on 4th grade Science standards.
