The students will have the opportunity to observe and discuss the illustrations in the book Zoom, by Istvan Banyai, to introduce and create a better understanding of the concept of zooming out of an image. The teacher will connect this concept to student visual culture by pointing out that digital mapping programs such as Google earth also utilize zoom different views of a specific location. The teacher will then introduce students to the art work, Rhyme by Terry Winter. The teacher will ask students to use their imagination to create an illustration based on their predictions of what Rhyme might look like if they were able to zoom out. Students will do so by including a small black and white copy of Rhyme in his or her artwork and drawing from it to show the bigger picture.
