Here is a great activity to help students focus before, during, and after reading a text. First, students preview the illustrations, headings, or table of contents and write down their predictions. As they are reading, they check off their predictions that were found in the text. Lastly, they confirm their predictions or explain what was different. While the focus is on making and confirming predictions, it also provides a way to check students' comprehension and understanding.
Included are separate sheets for fiction and nonfiction that can be used with any text. There are 2 differentiated versions for each genre: a simplified version with pictures and fill-in-the-blank response; and a more advanced version with open-ended questions.
When used with fiction stories, this activity meets CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.7: Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
