Students use dictionary skills to look up root word definition. (I break my class into groups. One group finds the root word definitions, the other group finds the root words with prefixes.) Then we look at how the definition changes when a prefix is added. As a class, we decide what each of the five prefixes mean and record. There is a place for the students to write a sentence using prefixes. The prefixes focused on are pre, dis, un, mis, and re.
