This activity is a sample of a word work pack for third grade featuring the prefixes im-, il-, in-, and ir-. Teach a mini-lesson about the prefixes. Then students can work in small groups or independently to sort a set of words by prefixes. Students then write the words under the appropriate flaps on the interactive notebook page. The next activity is putting word puzzles together that includes the word, a break down of the prefix and the base word, and the literal meaning of the word. To build comprehension, students use context clues in sentences to fill in the blank. Finally, students complete a chart with the word, break the word apart, give the literal meaning, then construct a definition in their own words.
