BIG BOGGLE: PREFIX, ROOT and SUFFIX REVIEW ACTIVITY

Give students an interesting way to review their prefixes, roots and suffixes as they play the classroom version of Big Boggle.

Here’s how it works:

Players get five minutes to log as many words containing four letters or more. Words can be listed on the formal score card or in a notebook. When time is called, the four bonus point words will be revealed. Players who located any or all of those words receive 10 points for each word.

Note: All bonus words will contain prefixes, roots, or suffixes.

Players then take turns reading the remaining words. If any two players have the same word, they both must cross that word from their lists.

A four-letter word earns 1 point, a five-letter word earns 2 points, a six-letter word earns 3 points, a seven-letter word earns 5 points and words with eight or more letters earn 11 points.

The player with the highest score wins.

CCSS: L4 - Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by analyzing meaningful word parts and words that indicate different meanings or parts of speech.

Common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots give clues to the meaning of a word such as:
care/careless;
comfortable/uncomfortable;
photograph/graphic;
analyze/analysis/analytical.
