This unit is a review of commonly used prefixes, suffixes, and stem words. - 17 prefixes, 10 suffixes, and 12 stem words.

It includes:
Lesson Plans
Posters to display or put on smart board for teaching
Word cards for concentration games
Study sheet
Study sheet with student example
Word web
Teacher word web examples
Test and answer key

Print the word cards on cardstock and laminate. Use a different color for each set of words (prefix, suffix, stem) Use the cards to play concentration. I make several sets to use in groups.

Here is a break down of lessons if you plan on using an hour block of time. If not, I would spread it out over a two-week span. Of course if your students have not been introduced to these words, you might want to spread it out into a 3-week unit. Week 1 for prefixes, week 2 for suffixes, and week 3 for stem words. You can give little quizzes along the way and then use the text that is included at the end.

Monday- Hand out study guide. Use “What is a Prefix” poster to reteach prefixes. Have students look up words for anti- in class. Fill out the Word Web together. Play the game concentration using the prefix word cards. They may use study sheets to help them remember the meanings. For Homework, have them fill out one example for each prefix and study!

Tuesday- Divide the prefixes up for however many groups of four you can make in your class. For example, there are 17 prefixes left after doing the first one together. If you have 5 groups of 4, I would assign 3 prefixes to each group and the groups that finish first can do an additional prefix until all 17 are completed. Have students share their examples with each other and fill out word webs on large construction paper or use the printable. (If all students have the same word, provide a dictionary for the group to look up additional words.) Have groups share their Words Webs with the class.

Use “What is a suffix?” poster to reteach suffixes. Introduce the suffix list. Do able/ible word web together. Play concentration using the suffix word cards. They may use study sheets to help them remember the meanings. For homework, fill out one example of each suffix and study!

Wednesday- Divide the suffixes up for however many groups of four you can make in your class. Have students share homework examples in groups and fill out word webs like Tuesday’s Prefix lesson. Share with class.

Use “What is a stem?’ poster to reteach stems. Introduce the stem list. As a class, work on foli word web together. Play concentration using the stem word cards. They may use study sheet to help them remember the meanings. For homework, fill out one example of each stem word and study!

Thursday- Divide the stems up for however many groups of four you can make in your class. Have students share homework examples in groups and fill out word webs like Tuesday’s Prefix lesson. Share with whole class.

Play concentration using all the words! They may NOT use the study sheet! Homework- Study all words.

Friday- Test
