I created this activity because it is the end of the year & time to review! I wanted something fun that would engage my students and review prefixes at the same time. This review was created with summative assessments in mind! I want my students to show what they know, and many assessments require students to read the sentence, determine the prefix and/or suffix, and then determine the root/base word.
This activity challenges students as they match the correct base word (petals) to the appropriate prefix (center of flower). I have included the prefixes re-, un-, de-, pre-. After students distinguish the correct prefix and base word, they can then write the entire word on their recording sheet. I have also included a review sheet that requires students to read the sentence, find the word with a prefix, and use what they know about the prefix to determine the meaning of the word.

First - CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.4b Use frequently occurring affixes as a clue to the meaning of a word.
Second – CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.4b Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known prefix is added to a known word (e.g., happy/unhappy, tell/retell).
Third -CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.4b Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known affix is added to a known word (e.g., agreeable/disagreeable, comfortable/uncomfortable, care/careless, heat/preheat).
