This project is a great way to end a social studies unit on prehistory! Students create a multimedia presentation about five events, time periods, or concepts in prehistory and then present the final projects to their class. Using their presentations as summative assessments, teachers can evaluate what students have learned about this period of human history. This project integrates reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills by having students: a) use print resources and doing online research to find images that represent selected events, b) write captions about the images, and c) either make audio recordings or give oral presentations to their class.

With step-by-step instructions and a handout for organizing information; a reference handout about citing resources using the MLA format and a handout for students to list the resources they used; and an evaluation rubric for letter/number grading systems and for standards-based grading, this product contains everything needed to implement this week-long project.

Used successfully with students in 6th and 7th grades, it is easily adaptable for students in other grades who have learned about prehistory. It is appropriate for English Language Learners at intermediate and higher levels of proficiency as well as native English-speaking students. Students can use computer programs and websites such as Photostory, Glogster, PowerPoint, or other similar program to create their presentations or they can create traditional posters by drawing their own pictures and finding photographs on the Internet. The finished projects make a great addition to student portfolios and can also be used during parent conferences to show what students have been learning.
