This resource is something I created out of frustration with the lack of pre-slavery and non-MLK/Ruby Bridges/Rosa Parks black history in the primary grades. I became especially frustrated with the fact that most educators teach about racism (if they teach it at all) as if it ended with the Civil Rights Movement. So, as I told my partner - "I'll create my own damn black history resources, then."
This is by no means comprehensive or perfect! I've used what I know about history and cultural studies to create a group of graphic organizers, primary sources, and thought-provoking questions.
+ an anchor chart about prejudice, which prompts you/students to break the word apart into 'pre' and 'judge'.
+ graphic organizers to go along with the anchor chart
+ primary sources from Brown v Board of Education and room for observation and inference
+ primary sources from the Louisiana riots (Iesha Evans) and room for observation and inference
+ essential question response page
+ bonus 'trading card' page for students to create trading cards for black people they have learned about
