Use the textbook in STRUCTURED GROUP WORK--soooo much better than that worksheets that came with the textbooks! This took some time, but I picked through the poetry section of the Prentice Hall Literature Book for 7th grade and created an opportunity to study poetry and work in a structured group.
*make sure you have the textbook shown in the picture as page numbers are referenced in this project.
This project takes about two weeks and the kids love it! They get to work in groups and I can assess their understanding of poetry.
I went through the poetry selections in the textbook and picked out six of what I felt, were the best poems for my students to study. I have about 18 kids in each of my class so I put the kids into groups of three- making six total groups. I assign each group one of these Poems and Presentations papers and the follow the simple instructions and answer questions about their specific poem. The students also go to the library to research their poet. I have attached an example and a list of requirements for the Poet Page part of the project.
This took a little time to create, but it works SO WELL in the classroom and allows the students to have some structure in their group work (which makes it easier on the teacher).
I count each section of the presentation as 10 points- totally 40 points and grade their written work and poet page separately.
The entire purchased product contains six different poem assignments and presentation requirements and a description and example of the Poet Page.
I recommend making three copies of each assignment and sorting the kids into groups of three. Give each student in the group the requirements for their poem.
Poems are ordered from easiest to most difficult (workload-wise).
