Stoichiometry involves three different areas of cognition: Abstract thought, organized thinking and some skill in math. This exercise is much like stoichiometry, but the abstract aspect is missing. This makes it easier and will give the students encouragement when they get to stoichiometry.
A big part of applied math is tracking the units. The answer sheets are carefully constructed to include all units and the teacher can use the answer sheets for the class without any preparation or even knowledge.
A “nut assembly” has a bolt, a nut and two washers. They are purchased by the kilogram and their weights are known. A bolt weighs 17 grams. A nut weighs 5 grams and a washer weighs 2.5 grams. So, with 2 kilograms of bolts, how many nut assemblies can be made?

The download includes a similar exercise using bologna and cheese sandwiches. At the discretion of the teacher, of course, it may be realistic to just copy and pass these out to the kids. With no weird chemistry abstraction, the students will be able to do this and even think it is fun.
This goes right to the heart of math literacy and applied math.
