One of my favorite lessons of the year that combines grammar and parts of speech with writing poetry. Two birds. One stone. I am always inspired by the thinking and creativity the students bring to this lesson. Best of all, they love it!
This 3 day lesson plan begins with reading (or viewing) the mentor text, Bears in the Night, by Stan and Jan Berenstain. On day one and day two, students learn what a preposition is. On day three, students begin to write their own poems using prepositional phrases. Lessons are styled around the gradual release philosophy: I do, We do together, You do together, You do on your own.
