This product contains a PowerPoint, a corresponding graphic organizer, and the 8 articles necessary to complete this assignment. It includes a brainstorming activity for the beginning and a wrap up at the end (connecting the idea of achieving your dream via a song).
This activity is intended to be completed prior to reading chapter 4 of Of Mice and Men. This lesson will allow students to delve deeper into the types of handicaps (emotional, physical, intellectual, etc.) the characters have in the novel by making a connection to handicaps that athletes, composers, and celebrities have experienced over the years.
For this lesson, students will be split up into groups after the brainstorming/bell ringer slide. Each group is assigned an article containing a famous person who had to overcome a handicap in order to achieve their dream/goal. Each group is responsible for presenting their person (background, handicap, how he/she overcame the handicap). As groups present their person, students will be filling out the chart provided on their graphic organizer. In addition, there is a slide for each person in the PPT with their name and picture, so students can more easily follow along with the presentations. At the end of the presentations, students will be asked some thought provoking questions about handicaps and their effects, as well as make a connection to themselves. A wrap up is also provided to continue this theme of overcoming obstacles to achieve your dream via a song. There is a link to the audio of the song, so you can play the song in the background as students are analyzing the slide with the lyrics to the song in order to answer the wrap up question.
