This language screening tool helps identify young students who may be at risk and in need of language intervention. It was created specifically for preschool children who are 4-5 years old, but can be used with older students with language delays. You can use this screener as a baseline for Response to Intervention or to flag children who may need further testing. This tool can also be used to help you assess progress and determine IEP needs for children who have special education/speech-language needs.
Begin by administering Level 1 of the screener. Use the attached data sheet to obtain a PASS or FAIL. If the child does not pass Level 1, administer Level 2 to obtain more detailed information about the child’s receptive and expressive language skills.
As with the Kindergarten Screener, compile all student data and find natural gaps in results. Typically, the lowest 20% of the group are the children you wanted to monitor or recommend for language intervention.
An additional data sheet is included for you to prepare a goal sheet with objectives for students who receive language intervention or therapy! :)
