Product Description
Preschool science and beginning cutting and scissors skills are addressed in Book 2 of this program, created by an occupational therapist.

This resource includes 8 developmentally graded preschool cutting activities. It is the second of ten books in the PRESCHOOL LEVEL Scissor Skills and SCIENCE Series. This book, called ALL ABOUT LEAVES, helps children (3 to 4 years old) master the second scissors skill, snipping and cutting fringe. Cutting activities are paired with science which includes fun stories that teach children all about leaves.

ALL ABOUT LEAVES, provides eight snipping and cutting fringe activities. Children can complete two activities per week so that each book lasts one month of preschool. This is the second step in building initial scissors skills for younger or special needs students.

Science concepts teach children what leaves are, what they do, how they look, and the way leaves change throughout the year.

Why pair scissors skills and cutting practice with Science?

1- MOTIVATION: Many young children are eager to learn about science. Including science concepts in this resource raises a child’s motivation for cutting activities.

2- COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT: Science topics stimulate a child’s looking, listening, thinking, and reasoning skills. Teachers and parents can incorporate these science lessons into everyday life.

3- REINFORCE ACADEMICS: Incorporating an appropriate science curriculum introduces science into childrens’ worlds, as well as language and math concepts.

Also included in this resource is a poster called The 3 T's: Rules for Using Scissors:
Using pictures, this poster reminds a child to tuck his elbow to his side, keep his thumb up, and cut toward the table.

* TUCK! . . . TUCK your elbow by your side

* TOP! . . . Keep your thumb on TOP

* TABLE! . . . Cut TOWARD the table and away from you

The Preschool Scissors Skills and SCIENCE series helps preschool kids (ages 3 to 4) master these 8 skills:

1- Cutting Playdoh:
Cutting Playdoh has a child use simple snipping motions, opening and closing their hands. This works on the movement used for cutting and improves hand strength.

2- Snipping:
Snipping is the next step in this program. Children snip strips of construction paper. Again, this addresses the movement a child uses to cut as well as hand strength.

3- Making Fringe:
Making fringe is the next developmental step presented in beginning scissors skills. This is a simple task for children inexperienced with using scissors.

4- Straight Lines:
Cutting straight lines requires continuous opening and closing of scissors in a rhythm, with one hand cutting and the other hand holding and moving the paper. A child must coordinate moving the paper while cutting.

5- Zig Zags:
This is the first step in which a child changes direction while cutting. This builds more advanced scissors control and precision. This calls for good visual monitoring as well.

6- Curves:
Learning to turn the page while cutting shows improved scissors skills. This step continues to work on a child’s bilateral (two-handed) skills, with one hand cutting and the other hand holding and turning the paper.

7- Spirals:
This step allows for more practice with turning a page while cutting. Making spirals requires almost constant planning, sequencing, and movement of the hands.

8- Circles:
This is the final step in the preschool scissors skills book. A child is not expected to cut exactly on the lines or a circle, but within a ½ inch or so of the line.

Explore our entire Scissors Skills & SCIENCE series. There are three levels in total, Preschool, Pre-K, and Kindergarten scissors skills. These are all coming soon.
