A scope and sequence for teaching writing workshop and introducing literature genres to preschool students.
The 11 page scope and sequence covers one year/33 weeks of topics and lessons for each week of the school year for preschool students. It introduces writing/writing time through journals at the beginning of the year and then shifts to making books later in the fall. Each week notes the topic, mini-lesson details, teacher preparation needs, student practice information and end of the week activities. There is one main lesson per week with several notes/ideas for small groups/conferencing and data collection needs.
The genres covered in this scope and sequence include: Journaling and Workshop Procedures, Picture Books, Wordless Books, Biographies, Narratives, Nonfiction, How-To/Procedure Books, Mixed Media/Favorite Authors.
These topics and mini-lessons are simply suggestions. Each topic and lesson should be modified to match the needs of your students as you conference with, assess and work with the class. Additionally genre studies can be shortened or lengthened based on the needs of your class.
