This coordinate graphing project is fun for the student and makes a great bulletin board idea as well. This project is for any season or holiday depending on the colors used. We have shown it in Christmas colors in our sample, but it can also be used for Chanukah and Kwanzaa, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc. Students will use their knowledge of coordinate graphing and ordered pairs to work creating a drawing of a present tied with a bow. This will be created by plotting ordered pairs and then connecting them with straight lines.
This activity can be a class project or something to be worked on independently when time allows. It also works as an extra credit assignment or when there is a substitute teacher.
This project is for the beginning coordinate graphing student who is familiar with fractions. It is also appropriate for the intermediate coordinate graphing student as well. The graph consists of points in the first quadrant using ordered pairs with whole numbers and five fractional points using the fractions 1/3, 1/2 and 2/3 for detail. There are also two points in which both the x- and y-coordinate contain fractions. If those points are too difficult for your students, you may want to plot them before you copy the grid.

CCSS.Math.Content.5.G.A.1 Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).
