Present Me Digital Video Poetry Project

This dynamic is a great way to engage your students through the use of technology and by allowing them to choose the poem that they’ll use in order to create their videos!

Students will choose their own poem for this high-interest video poetry project.
Once they’ve selected the poem, students will then create a slides presentation featuring the title, author or poet, the lines of the poem, and images illustrating the poem’s meaning.

An example illustrated slide presentation featuring “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes is included as a model.

After completing the slide presentation, students will also analyze their poem by using a poetry analysis template.

To prepare for their video project, students are directed to watch a high-interest video clip that includes simple suggestions on how to read a poem aloud. Students can also watch the linked videos of others reading poems aloud to learn about reflecting the mood of the poem with your voice and using voice inflection, pauses, and emphasis in order to highlight the poem’s theme.

Using the Present Me free Chrome Store Web App or by using the Present Me user-friendly website, students will upload their poetry slide presentation and create a video of themselves reading their poems.

Present Me allows multiple options for recording. All you need is a built-in camera (webcam). Headphones and mics are not needed. The website intuitively uses the computer’s built in microphone for recording. Present Me’s advanced recording function will record audibly a normal tone of voice without the need for an external microphone.

Teachers can decide the type of video their students will create. The poetry project videos can include audio only with students reading their poems aloud while showcasing their slide presentation or they can feature the student as he or she reads the poem.

Using the computer’s built-in webcam, students will record themselves reading the poem aloud as they manually progress through their slide presentation – creating a very slick looking video with a split-screen effect!

One of the best aspects of this resource includes the project slides presentation that’s provided for your students.

The presentation provides students with clear directions, structure, directions, and helpful video links to guide them throughout the entire process.

An editable teacher’s grading rubric is included. The rubric assesses each part of the poetry project – the poem analysis activity, their poetry slide presentation, and their ability to convey the poem’s meaning through the reading of their poems.

Students will be excited about the appearance of their final poetry video and so will you!
