The slides are divided into five sections. Each section addresses a different public speaking skill: overcoming public speaking anxiety, making eye contact, avoiding filler words like "um" or "like," being aware of movement, posture, and gestures, and monitoring the rate and speed of speaking voice. The slides give background on the importance of the skill as well as strategies for becoming proficient in the skill. They include links to video resources and information about research studies related to the skills as well.
This lesson is meant to be used as a jigsaw activity where students break up into groups of five and learn about one of the five skills. Then, groups come together and use a note-taking device (also included) to prepare a presentation about the strategies they learned. Students then present the information to their classmates, making a point to use at least one of the skills they learned from the PowerPoint.
