This project was incredibly fun for our students. Students researched different topics surrounding our controversial 7th president. Students were assigned to groups of 4 or 5, were assigned one of the topics, and colloborated together to creat a newscast.
Each group was assigned a topic, talking points, links to Youtube videos to help with research, and the essential question to help guide the reseach process. Essential Questions are included for your use.
Prior to the project, we asked students to select whether they would prefer being an Anchor, Jounalist, Interviewee or Producer of a newscast. They put their name in labled boxes, and we (the teachers) chose the groups by selecting names from they boxes. This worked well, as it was differentiated upon student interest.
We went over the guidlines and expectations of the project. The rubric is included. We gave the rubric to the students before they started.
The students worked in class for a week. A few groups worked outside of class, or came up during lunch time. However, most were able to get this completed during class (46 minute class periods).
The following week, the students spent 2 days watching the best newscasts (1 of each topic). Newscasts had to be approved by the teachers. After they watched the newscast, they had to respond to the Essential Question by writing a paragraph. They did this for each topic, including their own.
Our school was able to do this by using iMovie. However, this could be completed by video taping students, or having the students write the newscast out and perform live for the other students.
