Informational Writing about Presidents
On the following pages you will find a booklet format that will lead upper elementary students through the process of writing a report, or informational text, about a President.
When deciding what presidents students will study, there is the option of having the students draw president names out of a basket (those Presidential choices are provided on pages 26-30 and are ready for you to print and cut apart) or letting students choose a President but only allowing one student per President.
Each main topic includes a graphic organizer and a writing page. When the booklet is copied, the organizer should be on the left page and the writing lines on the right. It appears to be an acquired, practiced skill that students be able to look at all the information needed and then fill it in as they find it rather than looking for items in order. By using the graphic organizer before writing, it encourages authentic, creative writing and discourages copying sentences from the books, websites, etc.
After finding key information, this template also asks students to write an author page to supplement their text.

The following pages are ready to use tomorrow. Print pages 3 through 21, copy double sided and staple (I prefer the double side booklet double staple), and begin a new project with your students!
On pages 21 and 22 you will find some samples of ways to start a biography with voice in a way that will get your reader’s attention. Read these aloud to the class and discuss how the author created the introduction.
There are assessment rubric choices also provided. The informational writing rubric is from the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium and not something I have created, own, or endorse, but simply offer as an option.
