This unit is intended to provide an introduction of the presidential election process. I recommend using in in addition to reading presidential election literature that is appropriate for your class. It can be used alone or supplement what you already have. I would use it as shorter lessons over 4-5 days. (Day 1: introduce vocabulary, Check This Out; Day 2:Becoming Presidential Candidates; Day 3: A Great Tuesday; Day 4: Mock Election with stickers; Day 5: If I were president...) Please use it in the way that is best fit for your students! Have fun!!
Check This Out!
A worksheet explaining requirements of any presidential candidate along with comprehension and critical thinking questions.
Becoming Presidential Candidates
A reading passage explaining a bit about being chosen as a Democratic and a Republican candidate along with 4 multiple choice comprehension questions.
A Great Tuesday
A map is included with the updated electoral vote numbers for 2012. There is a brief explanation of voting in the president through popular vote and than electoral college votes. This is also a math worksheet working on the skill of estimation.
If I were inaugurated...
Two templates for students to fill in as if they were inaugurated as president of the United States. One is for their inauguration speech and the other is for them to draw a picture of themselves as president. (Could make a cute classroom display if mounted on 12X18 red and blue paper.)
5 vocabulary cards with pictures to use with this unit: candidate, political parties, campaign, polls, inaugurated
If you choose to hold a mock election in your classroom, there is a sheet of "I voted" stickers. Print and cut them out on sticky paper and hand them out to your young voters!
