The following worksheet is a 75 minute long, common core-based lesson on Presidential Reconstruction after the Civil War. It traces Reconstruction from its origins immediately after the Civil War through Lincoln’s and Johnson’s Plans, the 13th Amendment, and the Black Codes. This lesson contains a variety of student-centered activities designed to promote class discussion and critical thinking such as:
• Do now concerning the problems facing the US after the Civil War
• Cooperative learning activity – the creation of a reconstruction plan
• Primary and secondary source readings about Lincoln’s and Johnson’s reconstruction plans as well as the 13th Amendment and the Black Codes – includes several questions perfect for deeper class discussion.
• Answer the aim either directly on the worksheet or through an exit slip.
