This resource is a perfect way to engage students in nonfiction texts. The books are very informative, inexpensive, and feature very colorful photographs. This unit uses the following National Geographic Level two Readers: Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. There are eighteen pages of activities connected to these books. There are nine pages of activities for each book including: ABC order, comprehension, bingo, memory vocabulary card game, a play for two students, roll and read sentences, a table of contents activity, writing a letter to "teach" and a set of directions for writing those letters. These books are available through a variety of book stores. Teachers could teach with one book, whole group, using a document camera; use two copies of each book with partners reading the books and working on the worksheets together; or with five or six copies for small group use. Teachers could apply for funds to defray the cost by writing grants to companies who support education, or perhaps through local parent groups or district reading funds.
