Looking for fun games to play in your Library?
This set of dominoes allows students to match up Presidents with their wives (or First Ladies). They can match the dominoes end to end, or at right angles. While some students may not be so familiar with the First Ladies, I have included their maiden and married surnames, to make matching easier (for example, Martha Custis Washington; Abigail Powers Fillmore; and of course, Eleanor Roosevelt Roosevelt).
Although we have had 44 presidents, there are 43 presidents in this set, because Grover Cleveland is only represented once (even though he was the 22d and 24th president).
James Buchanan never married, so his match says “No Mrs. Buchanan.”
The wives of these four presidents died before their husbands took office, so while they are represented in this set, they technically never served as “First Lady”:
Martin Van Buren
Chester Allen Arthur
Several presidents were widowed, and therefore, have their first and second wives represented:
If you feel your students may not know some Presidents or First Ladies, you can modify the game by giving them the answer key (as a reference sheet). You can also guide them, in a whole class activity.
