After reading a story and seeing the use of regular and irregular verbs in the present perfect tense, students come up with their own rule of the present perfect by looking at the patterns seen in the reading (TPRS). I like to create conversation cards to get students talking while using the target grammar structure.
First, each student is assigned a letter (A or B). After, desks aside and chairs aligned, all A´s go on one side and sit and the B´s go on the other side and sit. A´s have the questions and B´s have sentence frames that will help them answer. After 20 seconds, B´s move one seat over and A´s ask the same question to a new person. After 1 minute, A´s and B´s switch sides. Activity goes on for about 8-10 minutes moving seats and switching letters. When finished, students create one question and turn it in as an exit slip. This gives teacher new ideas for questions.
