Chromosomes, Genes and Basic Genetics Foldable
Check out this foldable, which will help all students see and understand how the basic components of our genetics work! It's even differentiated for students on different levels.
In this foldable, students learn that inherited traits of individuals are governed in the genetic material found in the genes within chromosomes in the nucleus of a cell. Depending on which foldable version you choose, students may dive deeper to recognize that genes carry instructions for making proteins, and it is these proteins that govern the traits (phenotype) of individuals. They will understand chromosomes and that the many, many genes located within them come in pairs, with each biological parent contributing one half of the pair. These chromosomes pairs (also known as homologous pairs) have the genes for a trait in the same location, but each might have different versions of those genes. These different possible versions or forms of the genes are called alleles. Students will know that individuals that have genes with two of the same allele form are referred to as having a homozygous genotype, and ones that have two different alleles in a gene pair have a heterozygous genotype. This foldable is designed to give students the foundational knowledge to further explore basic Mendelian (single-locus) inheritance patterns.
