As many of you know, prewriting development is an important precursor to handwriting. It teaches students the eye-hand coordination needed to develop letter formation. Prewriting teaches angle execution and motor planning. Motor planning is the sequence of movements needed to complete any task. In this case, how to draw shapes and eventually letters. That is why it is so important to teach children prewriting strokes using appropriate motor planning. This involves top to bottom and left to right movements. Prewriting also teacher appropriate angel execution for lines and shapes. If students learn to complete their prewriting strokes using proper motor planning and angel excution, it will carry over to appropriate letter formation.
There are two different models of worksheets to use with this program. One set with circles inside the prewriting strokes, and one set with just the lines. Both sets utilize the visual cue of a green light to cue the students were to start and red light when to stop. This system helps assure correct motor planning. There are some similar and some very different activities to use with each set of the worksheets. I created both sets because different teachers that I work with like either the lines or the circular prewriting models. Also, I have found my students are different and some respond better to one set versus the other. Therefore, I like them both for different reasons. Each set is sold separately to allow you to pick the one that best fits your likes and needs. In each file you will find: the prewriting worksheets, a handout of how to use the worksheets, a handout of the sequence or hierarchy of the prewriting strokes complete with pictures of the prewriting strokes with the green and red lights bubbled in, and a cover page for a notebook. There will be a list of suggested pieces of equipment to gather such as: play-doh, pipe cleaners, broken crayons, small sticker or stamps, finger paint, etc. These materials are typically found easily in a classroom. They help to add the multisensory experience to the prewriting development.
Hope your students enjoy these prewriting programs as much as mine have!
