Just one piece of the financial literacy program that I created! This program is a 2016 winner of the IBAT Financial Literacy Award as one of the top 3 financial literacy systems in the state of Texas. This program has always won local grants. The program is based on students balancing a checkbook. It covers several math and social studies TEKs and is designed to be used for classroom management. The students get so involved in the program that they actually ask for more homework and jobs in the classroom! They want to earn money and be able to buy items from you.
The system starts on Day 1 and can help you in teaching your Social Studies lessons over being a good citizen, following rules, and being responsible. The checking account application that is included in the packet will help prompt you to discuss the word pledge. It helps you cover most of the SS TEKs in that unit including 2.13A, 2.13C, and 2.13D.
This system can be adjusted for your needs in your classroom. It builds throughout the entire year and can even be added to if the system continues throughout each grade level. For example, it could be started in 2nd grade and then continued into 3rd grade and that teacher can add on more borrowing and lending. Then 4th grade teacher could add on with multiplying when buying several of one thing or may even add interest to borrowing and lending. The base of the system is so basic that it can be worked anyway you need to cover your math TEKs in any grade!
