Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice serves as social commentary about courtship or socioeconomic class issues during the Regency Era period of England. This contains three assignments to help students explore that. The first two are designed to help students find textual evidence to incorporate into an essay that answers the question How is Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice a social commentary about courtship or socioeconomic class issues during the Regency period?

1st: There is a textual evidence Post-It assignment. As students read Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice they will look for textual evidence that can serve as an example of how the novel serves as social commentary about courtship or socioeconomic class issues during the Regency period. There is a handout and rubric for students. You can hang butcher paper in the classroom and have students put their Post-It notes on the poster to create a wall of textual evidence (make sure they put their name or initials on their Post-Its!). If I do that I have them take a picture of their Post-It notes with their phone so they have a back up copy of it.

2nd: There is a graphic organizer that goes along with the Post-It assignment. It asks students to take some of their textual evidence Post-It notes and to analyze them asking the question how is this an example of social commentary about courtship or socioeconomic class issues during Austen’s time period?

3rd: The third assignment is a group assignment that uses project based learning. It has students complete a three part project where they research social conventions during the Regency Period and compare/contrast them to social conventions today. Then they create a brochure or visual aid of their findings to share with the class. Next, they select a scene from the novel that illustrates this and perform it for the class. There is a rubric for this.

4th: The fourth assignment is the actual essay prompt. it is an expository essay explaining how Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice serves as social commentary about courtship or socioeconomic class issues during the Regency Era period of England and comparing/contrasting it to social conventions today.

I have used these assignments in a Dual Credit English class and an English 4 class. These files are editable! I made them in Pages. I included the original pages file and also exported them into a Word file. I've also included a PDF version of these assignments.
