As a proponent of math that promotes higher level thinking I have never been a huge fan of calculators in K-2.
Now, though, with testing in the lower grades becoming more of a reality, I want my students to be able to use all of the tools available to them.
This activity is geared towards turning the calculator from an ornament on my student's desks that they play with when they are finished testing, to a tool for checking their work or getting a quick answer.
These two centers focus on using the calculator to add and subtract 1, 2, and 3 digit numbers.
The first center Spin and Add has 8 spinners that students can spin (using a paper clip) and add 10 numbers using the calculator.
The second center Calculator Action has students follow a sequence of steps either adding or subtracting. The back of each task card has either the difference or the sum the student should arrive at if they correctly followed the directions.
Numbers in this set range from 1 - 1242.
