The House in the Night gives us a wonderful opportunity to challenge primary level gifted learners—in language and poetry, critical and metaphorical thinking, visually, and artistically.
In this lesson, students will:
a.) discover the pattern of the poem and discuss critical thinking questions about the book,
b.) think critically about symbols, metaphors and language using a graphic organizer and class discussion,
c.) construct a personalized cumulative pattern poem,
d.) And thoughtfully illustrate their poem using “scratch art foil” which is similar to the art work in this Caldecott-winning book.
Included is the full lesson with instructions, several ready-to-print graphic organizers, templates and planning sheets, lined paper, five referenced core literacy standards, and a sample scratch art picture.
