This is an inquiry-based packet from my local government unit. I teach all of my social studies content through these explorer packs. Students begin with an essential question and an "I can..." learning target. They activate schema for the topic and do some exploring through reading and reflecting on the topic. Then they view a video (this is a brainpopjr video. You can get a free trial brainpopjr subscription, or substitute a video of your chooseing) and continue to develop their learning. The packet contains an assessment quiz and a page for direct instruction if you the professional determine more learning needs to take place for the whole class or a small group/individual
When I teach using these I really hold the students' hands for the first several units and we work collectively at the same pace. Once they master the procedure of the explorer pack, they move through them at their own paces allowing for lots of independence and making time for differentiation. These packets are not going to teach your children EVERYTHING about social studies, but they will allow your children to discover the content* and explore it independently while you customize your instruction to the needs of specific students. Have fun and watch for more explorer packs/units in the future!
*these packets are aligned with current social studies standards (phrased as student friendly learning targets). They will be updated and you will be eligible for a FREE updated version once the new standards are available.
