Check out this ELA Writing Workshop unit on nonfiction writing a personal narrative geared to the primary elementary levels of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades, which includes complete fully-scripted SmartBoard Notebook Unit Plans (only available in the SmartNotebook document - not their own document), full worksheets, grading rubrics, and more!
This month-long unit is geared toward beginning of the year lessons on Nonfiction Narrative writing. It is perfect to introduce the little ones to creating a personal small moment story about their own experiences and introduces many essential writing skills, including drafting, editing, revising, peer work, publishing, and an author's celebration. It is created around the grade 2 writing CCSS writing standards, but is easily adapted to first and third grades. All you need to teach it is to read it!
The twenty lessons begin with several "megalessons" where teachers first model and create a shared writing piece with the students. After students understand and see how a nonfiction narrative is written, the rest of the lessons follow a more traditional "mini lesson" format that is evident in most Writing Workshops where teachers quickly model a skill that students will practice in their own writing. My students' writing pieces were phemonenal this year after trying out this structure!
The zip file includes a 175-page SmartBoard Notebook file with complete lesson plans. Lessons follow best practices of the Gradual Release of Responsiblity format: teachers model skills, students practice with the teacher and peers, until they do so independently in their own writing. It also incorporates links to videos of the texts, interactive activities, authentic student writing examples, mentor texts, and visuals.
Also, included are full student worksheets in black and white to save on ink. Worksheets include writing papers, graphic organizers, activities, writing resources (sequencing word lists, adverb lists, etc.), editing/revising checklists, authentic student writing examples, and more. There is also a teacher rubric based on year-start Common Core State Standards.
