In my class, my first graders love to imagine what well-loved characters would say in new situations. To encourage writing with my little artists, I give them the opportunity to illustrate pictures of favorite characters and then use these primary ruled speech bubbles to write what these characters are saying.
The possibilities with these are only limited by your students’ and your imagination. One of my favorite activities we used them for was writing our own Thanksgiving version of Mo Willem’s Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! After reading the original, my kiddos wrote what they thought a turkey would say to convince them to let him drive the bus.
Whatever you decide to do with these, they will help to encourage excitement about writing! I would love to hear what wonderful ways you use them in your classroom!
